4. In fact, Mono-Green Food became popular because Wicked Wolf provides a passable matchup against Gruul while being favored against Esper Doom. List. I like this card especially against green aggro decks, but it’s worthy to note this wrath misses Yorvo, Beanstalk Giant, and Bonecrusher Giant. Mono Green Food Shadow’s Verdict – I really wish this card cost one less mana. You don’t have to jump over the hurdles of solving combat math in aggro mirrors, and instead you focus your attention on how to gain control over the board and set up for an inevitable victory. Latest Set: Zendikar Rising. Maindeck 52. It’s also worthy to note Jace has high loyalty, so even in the aggro matchups he’ll be able to stick around hopefully longer than a turn or two. In total there are 184 competitors battling for $250,000 in prizes across Standard and Historic. Gruul creatures are so large that Archon cannot block profitably so it cannot be viewed as a stabilizer. I personally haven't liked Extinction Event very much in this matchup. It's important to immediately answer any large creature so the opponent cannot cast a discounted Great Henge on the following turn. While this is my first written article for F2F, you might be familiar with some of my work already if you’re an avid Brian David-Marshall and Michael Flores fan. Unread Messages All chats. I don't want to play Skyclave Apparition because it doesn't deal with the most problematic permanents against Gruul - The Great Henge and Vivien, Monster's Advocate. Zendikar Rising really has a bunch of fun build-arounds. You win games where the early turns involve killing creatures. This standard could see a bevy of powerful go-wide decks, such as mono white and mono red. For this reason I would have to play Archon in addition to sweepers and Baneslayer Angels. Seraphio STD. UB has access to a lot of cheap instants and sorceries, such as Opt, various removal spells, and Agonizing Remorse. Jwari Disruption – This is one mdfc I’m actually not sure how to evaluate, but when it comes to arena I’ll definitely be trying this as a 4-of. I do like Uro paired with wrath effects, but that’s a discussion for another time. Ultimately, being able to include a game-ending spell in your land slot is a deal I’m willing to make, and I’ll gladly be putting in a couple of copies of this card in any UW control deck I build. I’m only really interested in drawing multiple copies to gum up the board or have game ending threats. By Shredder6b6c6 Created Jun 6, 2020 Updated Jun 6, 2020. Since it's the best way to deal with small creatures I'm playing fewer Bloodchief's Thirst. Milling too many basics can make Fabled Passage weaker. Esper Control ZNR by SBMTGDev. 8 13 47 5. Frantic Inventory: While in a lot of control decks I’d much rather have Omen of the Sea because of the scry abilities and it has synergy with Yorion, Frantic Inventory is a card I’m interested in casting with my Sea Gate Stormcaller to accrue card draw. The first League Weekend saw the majority of the MPL and Rivals League players favor Azorius Blink (Yorion) or Dimir Rogues, but this month two other decks take the top spots. Banishing Light has easy color requirements to cast and answers Trail of Crumbs as well as Feasting Troll King. However, Soul Shatter may prove to be less useful. While this card is worse against the go-wide aggro decks, I think ECD will play an important role in removing threats we’ve known for awhile now (Uro, Winota, Ugin, Elder Gargaroth) and will deal with some new threats for Zendikar Rising, especially Leyline Tyrant which can prove to be a hard to answer endgame finisher from red decks. Fatal Push saw a ton of standard play and I believe this card will. Top 8 Magic: Mythic Invitational Deck Review, Answers: Counterspells, removal spells, wraths, Sources of Card Advantage: Planeswalkers, draw spells, 2 for 1’s, Finishers: Individual threats or threats that stockpile (Dream Trawler, Castle Ardenvale). I like taking advantage of Yorion as a companion but ultimately I think the numbers in this list will be smoothed out once the format settles. Planeswalker 2 2 Ashiok, Nightmare Muse. Close. As I mentioned before the sideboard is designed to cut a majority of removal for counters, hand disruption, and Shark Typhoon. You can bluff having a counterspell and use the mana to cast this instead, it can help guarantee you a wrath on turn 4, and most importantly you’re less likely to whiff since your deck will be packed with way more spells than in recent standard formats with the inclusion of MDFC’s. Creature 2 2 Dream Trawler. Buy Now! My initial Yorion list I copied from Jason Fleurant featured Dance and most of my losses came from not drawing enough lands. Upvote 0. 1. I think ECD will be one of the premier sources of card advantage for white control decks. I'm much more comfortable beating Temur Ramp after sideboard. While you can always add more, this is the standard deck size, allowing for better consistency in starting hands, draws, and general performance. Gain control of target creature with converted mana cost X. While the pandemic has put a sudden halt to my travels, I’ve used the interim to explore MTG Arena. A 2/1 for 2 mana might also just be fine to slow down an aggro deck as well. Sea Gate Restoration // Sea Gate Reborn – I’m actually less excited about this mdfc than the other two previously mentioned. Since Omnath was banned, Standard has been fantastic. Zendikar Rising: Type: Legendary Creature - Hydra Horror: Cast: Rarity: R: Grakmaw, Skyclave Ravager enters the battlefield with three +1/+1 counters on it. It makes future Anaxs and bigger creatures to protect less threatening. Realm-Cloaked Giant – Depending on how the format shakes out I can see having access to a 5th or 6th wrath if there are a lot of prevalent aggro decks. Starting off, we've got one of my favourite cards to come out of Zendikar Rising … Romuald STD. Eliminate can kill 3/3s with reach created by Vivien. This card will be worse in open-decklist tournaments though. What I love about this card is that it allows some early interaction, especially against tricky cards like Fervent Champion and Selfless Savior. Extinction Event on odd will help reclaim the advantage if Yorion is taken from your graveyard. Some lists play it currently. While I’m trademarked as a Burn player in most formats, I’ve always gravitated towards control decks in Standard (I’m bad at combat math, sue me!). I would prefer to have additional counters and removal. Other Zendikar Rising Decks. Battle for Zendikar is shaping up to be an exciting set, and perhaps one of the decks I am most excited about it Esper Control. 6. 2019 Holiday Exchange! For example a Soul Shatter might take out a Winota before your opponent can attack, preventing you from losing the game on the spot. While these aren’t as good as shocklands and don’t have the basic land type stapled onto them, untapped sources of two colors of mana are still vital to any multicolored deck’s mana base. 10. 9/25/2020: Black has access to great removal so I shouldn't have to lean on such an inefficient sweeper. I’m currently playing Esper Doom in standard and have always enjoyed the control play style/Esper. We have a counterspell in Neutralize, a wrath in Shatter, anti-aggro cards in the form of Glass Casket and Birth of Meletis, and some late game threats as well. The combo of returning Brazen Borrower with Zareth San, the Trickster must always be respected. It's considered to be a stock White removal spell, but it has been falling flat for me. A kicked Jace gives you two threats and together in sync they provide a nice engine, the token copy allowing you to scry cards to the top of your library that won’t immediately kill your original Jace. Esper Doom has an amazing late game, though it is going to struggle a bit more in the early game, compared to the Orzhov list, so there is a tradeoff. It's reasonable to play a second Branchloft Pathway over the third Plains if you expect more Mono-Green Food and less Rogues. 14. I didn't like that my sweeper exiled my own Skyclave Apparition. I'm going to heavily consider my matchups against these decks when building the optimal 80 card deck. So today, we're going to Magic Arena with this Esper Control deck featuring Lithoform Engine! Zendikar Rising 's pool of blue cards is all over the place, but it's far from sloppy or chaotic. The big decks in Standard are as follows: There are plenty of decks I left out, but the ones above play key roles in the current Rock-Paper-Scissors metagame. To top it all off we even lost access to Teferi, Time Raveler – a ban which broke my heart. I’ll be honest, Standard has not been the kindest to ‘traditional’ control decks in recent months. Deckcycle Deckcycle Feature Queue ... (Zendikar Rising). 18 of the 24 years of my Magic life have been digital. I think having access to Inspired Ultimatum and Narset will help this version overtake the other control decks in the mirror while still having potent answers to aggressive strategies. Deck Potential: Low . Since UW doesn’t have access to targeted removal like UB does, Casket will be an important piece of removal against aggro strategies. First strike deals nicely with Embercleave even when it's equipped to Questing Beast. Esper Doom in Zendikar Rising Standard. Each week a new foe appears only to be vanquished by the next big thing. A seven mana sorcery to make two 4/4 angels is not that exciting on face value, however having access to a land at any time is what makes this card so good. ... but they cannot be blinked with Yorion or else it will return under your control. Soul Shatter – This brings back memories of Crackling Doom, however this upcoming standard format will look very different than that of KTK. 4. Elspeth's Nightmare exiling artifacts and enchantments is the best way to interact with Dance in Game 1. I don't foresee Mono-Green Food to become a large percentage of the field because it's greatest matchup would naturally fade. These cards are definitely a head-scratcher, it’s not obvious if you should just include this as an auto four-of or if you should count this just as a land in your deck. Confounding Conundrum is another card to help slow down Uro ramp strategies. 15. 2. The difficult part of the Food matchup is I need to respect both creatures and noncreatures. Standard, in the past year, has been primarily about decks taking advantage of their ‘nut draws’ and executing their game plan efficiently. Soul Shatter seems very matchup dependent. We'll assume you're ok with this, but you can opt-out if you wish. Brazen Borrower/Into the Roil: I like Brazen Borrower in UW Control decks while Into the Roil seems better with Sea Gate Stormcaller. Whenever another creature you control dies, if it had a +1/+1 counter on it, put a +1/+1 counter on Grakmaw. Legion Angel – I’m not sure how to accurately evaluate this card. I'm more interested in tempo as the game will be decided earlier. Zareth San will take milled permanents such as Omen of the Sea, but they cannot be blinked with Yorion or else it will return under your control. Gruul luckily can handle the decks designed to prey on Esper Doom. While I’ve been playtesting a ton (and will have an upcoming article on that soon) spoiler season is at its height and I can’t stop thinking about how Standard will look in just a few weeks. Esper Doom became popular as a good control deck against Gruul with decent tools against Rogues. The principle is the same." I’m utilizing Jace to fill the 3-mana walker spot that is left by Narset and Teferi and trying out both Jwari Perturbation and Emeria’s Call mdfc’s in land slots. Historically walkers have needed some combination of self-protection, card advantage, or ability to close the game, recent examples include Teferi, Time Raveler and the recently reprinted Ugin. I do like that this card is a nice answer to the resilient creatures such as Seasoned Hallowblade and Anax. I love that this card has a bit of a downside for playing it, paying 3 life for an untapped white has serious repercussions, but I’m glad that at least you have the option to put this land into play untapped if need be. My sideboard is geared toward beating Blue decks which means I want the maindeck to stand up to Gruul. Also other relevant reanimate targets of note: Kitesail Freebooter, Blacklance Paragon, Archfiend’s Vessel. Again with this list I’m trying to follow some of the “rules” of building control decks: Removal, Card Draw, Wraths, Finishers, etc. I would prefer to have an enchantment in this slot because Gruul can sideboard in Embereth Shieldbreaker. The New Esper Control. UB, UW, and Esper, and Jeskai have been the hallmark colors combinations of control decks of standard in recent years. The trick will be balancing how many copies you play relative to your Extinction Events and Ashioks. UB has better fixing with a pathway land, but I’m ultimately not sure if the Sea Gate package is worth including. Mythos of Nethroi has been very strong. If the format contains a lot of white or red go-wide decks with creatures with 1 or 2 toughness, Mythos of Vadrok might prove to be exceptional. I feel like this card is worth its drawbacks, but I can also see this card seeing little play. This one is built to utilize Agadeem’s Awakening. The correct amount of Soul Shatters will be reflective of its targets in the metagame. The Zendikar Rising Standard decklists are in for the first 2020-2021 League Weekend and the majority of the players in the MPL and Rivals are putting their hopes on a Yorion, Sky Nomad-based archetype or Dimir Rogues. Here's how Carvalho, Damo Da Rosa, and Sperling are getting ready for December's biggest tournament. MTG Salvation . The upside is making Yorion and Doom Foretold more powerful. The Commander format got a real boost from the Commander Legends set, while Zendikar Rising added all kinds of adventurous cards to the Standard format. Glass Casket – Although time will tell how the standard format shakes out, I’m convinced that Glass Casket will be an auto 4-of in UW control decks, for a couple reasons. Esper Enchantments. While you never want to have too many tap lands, and 2BB to kill a creature at instant speed is a worse Murder, Hagra Bite, like every other mdfc, packs versatility. Sideboard guide - Standard Esper Doom deck Here is Léo Lima from HG Team, and today we have the sideboard guide to Esper Doom of love, that scored 13-1 and took me to the Innovation Championship that will take place on November 21st and 22nd. I've seen players leave in Doom Foretold in the mirror; it's either a mistake or they don't have enough cards to board in. Omen of the Sun is playable, but I choose to include more two-mana removal for Gruul. Individually Esper Doom can remove any permanent, but a constant stream of sticky threats demands a specific set of answers. I have played as many as four maindeck Baneslayers and cut sweepers altogether. This card will always have to be played at sorcery speed however, and also isn’t always the best finisher, especially in control mirrors where your opponent has Castle Ardenvale. Zendikar Rising Draft guide, by Paulo Chiozzani - HG Team Paulo from HG Team here, and today we will talk about a topic and format very dear to some, but hated to others: the notorious DRAFT, of Zendikar Rising. This leaves Yorion with the opportunity to draw the wrong half of the deck. How are you building your decks with the new mdfc’s? Last month I hit Mythic in Limited, and this month I’ve been upping my Historic game to prep for the September Zendikar Rising Qualifier Weekend. Vmoney117 MDN. Dance of the Manse is one of the ways to bust the game open. Unlike Emeria’s Call, which can provide a late-game threat or way to stabilize a board, Sea Gate Restoration is a 7-mana draw spell and it’s uncertain how many cards you would draw in a given scenario. Compare. Uro and Lucky Clover are two cards on my radar that might be difficult for control decks to deal with, but I think time will tell how these decks will fare in a brand new format. However, Zendikar Rising gives us a clean slate and I’m excited about the return of ‘traditional’ control strategies. We’ve seen cards insanely overpowered for their mana cost, such as Oko/Once Upon a Time, and we’ve seen cards that, unanswered, can run away with a game in only a matter of turns (Fires of Invention, Nissa Who Shakes the World). Zendikar Rising Mono Blue Mill Modern* Mill Mono-Blue. I see a list on MTG Goldfish meta page - but the best results is a 3-1 in an SCG event. Now applying what we know let’s look at some sample lists and discuss card choices for what standard might look like with Zendikar Rising added to the mix. Rarity: Uncommon. Multiple Aggro strategies have creatures that resist Shatter the Sky, such as Anax, Basri’s Lieutenant, Seasoned Hallowblade, and Selfless Savior. This card is comparable to Censor. I do believe, however, that the inclusion of these powerful mdfc’s as well as the strong number of card options from the last four sets will pave the way for control to be a highly competitive strategy once the new set rolls around. This is another reason why I like running so many glass caskets. Heart's Desire can be answered by Glass Casket, Banishing Light, and Elspeth's Nightmare. Since the Lovestruck Beast should be killed immediately answering the 1/1 token can come later. An unanswered Lotus Cobra will lead to some seriously busted draws in the new standard. When I say ‘traditional’ it’s important to have an understanding of the hallmarks of what make a control deck, well, a control deck! Card Number: 66. I was high on Dance of the Manse last week, but Emeria's Call is likely the correct choice. Esper Control by dontknoxthehustle. Agadeem Reanimator. By Kyle Boggemes. This brings me to my next card…. There are many viable cards for Esper Control and we encourage tweaking the deck to suit your preferred playstyle. Well that about wraps it up for today’s article. I think this is a good matchup for Esper, and I beat it both times I played it in the Zendikar Rising Championship. Emeria’s Call // Emeria, Shattered Skyclave – I’m not the first to say it, but these modal double face cards are incredibly powerful. Even with these cards banned or rotating out of standard, we still have two cards that have worrisome power levels: Lucky Clover, which inherently “doubles” your mana, and Uro, Titan of Nature’s wrath, a redundant high power creature that aims to stabilize the board and bury its opponent in card advantage. The main draw is it's a removal spell to be reset with Yorion which turns problematic permanents into generic creatures to be exiled with Glass Casket. Trail of Crumbs and Feasting Troll King are tough to answer consistently. 12. Nighthawk Scavenger // Confounding Conundrum – These are two sideboard options that I wanted to briefly touch on. Esper Control (Yorion) – Roman Fusco – Test Deck. Extinction Event can exile Edgewall Innkeeper as well as adventure creatures if Gruul gets a quick start. It's no secret Esper Doom lines up well against Gruul so I expect it to continue to succeed. It’s important to tag these creatures, especially ones with dying triggers before they accrue too much value. At least an Extinction Event can remove a Winota or Beanstalk Giant. Standard continues to be great. I personally hate Shatter in this deck because most threats in Gruul would draw them a card. Now, onto the spoilers! UW and UW Yorion have seen play throughout the last year, and while UB hasn’t had its time to shine, I’m confident that some new cards combined with the power level of Ashiok, Nightmare Muse, will change that. This takes care of Nissa or Ugin nicely. 11. I do like that Extinction Event gets around cards like Seasoned Hallow Blade and Anax and completely exiles Uro. Ruin Crab [Zendikar Rising] CA$0.75 7. Rulings. Vs. Temur Ramp +2 Mystical Dispute +1 Negate +1 Heartless Act-4 Extinction Event. Evolving gameplay and fresh strategies make it one of the most fun and popular ways to play. Life loss is a heavy price to pay, especially if you have any of the mdfc mythics. Aside from the return of landfall, one of the bigger mechanics in Zendikar Rising is the Party mechanic, which wants to see you control some combination of a wizard, cleric, rogue, and warrior. The deck ended up winning the SCG Kaldheim Qualifier, and although it didn’t have any other Top 8 finishes this weekend, it’s going to end the format in the number three position. This is relevant because the counter granting the ability gets around Heartless Act. Mazemind Tome is weaker than Treacherous Blessing because I would prefer to cast an Omen or Egg on the second turn to help bridge to the mid game. Censor you can pay a blue mana to cycle at any point in the game, Jwari Perturbation is always a land on the other side. Not optimistic on its inclusion but worth testing a copy maindeck. Even with the most recent bannings of Growth Spiral and Cauldron Familiar, UW Control has fallen victim to Uro/Nissa ramp strategies packed with various counterspells, discard spells, and the indomitable Hydroid Krasis. It's worth devoting an early removal spell for Edgewall Innkeeper even though it won't help much in casting the Great Henge. Doom Foretold is weak in games where the opponent draws too many cantripping permanents. That being said I think control decks have access to some really powerful cards and I’m less concerned about the format being warped around a few specific problem cards. Hagra Mauling // Hagra Broodpit – speaking of MDFC’s, Hagra Mauling is another card I’m happy to play in my UB control deck. Bloodchief’s Thirst – This card draws a lot of similarities to Fatal Push. esper control. Posted on November 17, 2020. There's one more Doom Foretold deck to talk about. I’m interested to see how many of these mdfc’s we should realistically be playing since a control deck doesn’t want to play a tapped land every single turn. UGx Ramp decks were also gifted with the reprinting of Lotus Cobra, which should strike fear in the hearts of all control mages. Meanwhile, in Modern, many classic decks are still living up to their reputation, and one of them is the notorious Esper Control. While this card could see play in a variety of strategies, potentially even in a deck revolved around kicker cards, I think this card could find a home in UB control. Play Treacherous Blessing later in the game if possible, to avoid life loss. I would like additional ways to answer Klothys in an open decklist tournament as I would only be able to answer it with Elspeth Conquers Death. Here are some deck that focus on different cards from Zendikar Rising.
